That name “Damascus” makes people think they’re buying a piece of ancient legendary steel. They’re not. Nobody fully knows how it was made anymore
What you’re buying today is called pattern-welded steel. Smith takes multiple different steel alloys, forges them together in layers, folds them, and then etches the surface with acid to bring out that rippling pattern. It’s a real skill. But it’s a different thing entirely from the ancient steel the name borrows from.
